From the 1st of October, halogen light bulbs were officially banned for sale in the UK with fluorescent light bulbs due to follow the same fate soon.
As part of the UK’s efforts to tackle climate change, halogen light bulbs are now banned from sale in the UK and retailers are no longer able to sell halogen lightbulbs. This has been part of a phased legislation on the sale of these high energy use lighbuls that first began in 2018.
It is estimated that the switch to LED lighting, which currently accounts for two thirds of lightbulb sales in the UK, will cut 1.26 million tonnes of CO2. The ban on halogen and fluorescent lighting is expected to see LED lighting become the dominant lighting source by 2030 with an expected 85% market share.
“We’re phasing out old inefficient halogen bulbs for good, so we can move more quickly to longer lasting LED bulbs, meaning less waste and a brighter and cleaner future for the UK.” Energy Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan
Switching to LED lighting
There are many advantages to commercial, retail and industrial business sectors when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL).
LED Lights are an affordable and simple way of reducing energy bills for a business. They are up to 90% more energy efficient than conventional lighting systems. LED lights can last up to 16 times as long as a halogen equivalent and unlike other lighting solutions, LEDs do not simply stop working when they reach the end of their life. Instead, after around 50,000 hours, they will gradually become dimmer before needing to be replaced. This compared to a halogen bulb with has only an average 3,000 hours life expectancy while Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) have around 10,000 hours of light per lamp. This means that on top of annual energy savings, your business can save money on maintenance and replacement light bulbs as well.
