Precision Detection. Rapid Response. BS 5839 Compliance.
A fire alarm system is more than just a collection of devices; it is a critical life-safety network designed to detect, alert, and protect. At HF, our Fire & Security division specialises in the design, installation, and maintenance of advanced fire detection systems tailored to the specific risk profile of your building.
All our installations adhere strictly to British Standards BS 5839 Part 1, ensuring your premises meet the legal requirements for fire safety in the UK.

Understanding Fire Alarm Categories
The BS 5839 standards categorise fire alarm systems based on their primary objective: the protection of life, the protection of property, or manual operation.
Category M: Manual Systems
Category M systems rely on human intervention. They are typically used in low-risk environments where there is no sleeping risk and occupancy numbers are low.
- Manual Only: Utilising hand bells or gongs.
- Manual Electric: Relying on “break glass” call points located at exit routes and electronic sounders to alert occupants.
Category L: Protection of Life
Category L systems are specifically designed to protect building occupants. They are subdivided into five levels based on the extent of automatic detection:
- L1 (Maximum Protection): Automatic detection is installed in every room, escape route, and large void areas. Sounders must achieve a minimum of 65dB(A) throughout the building, rising to 75dB(A) at bedheads for sleeping risks.
- L2 (Additional Protection): Detection is placed on all escape routes and rooms leading to them, as well as high-risk areas like boiler rooms or kitchens.
- L3 (Standard Protection): Similar to L2, but focused primarily on escape routes and rooms adjoining them to ensure occupants have sufficient time to evacuate.
- L4 (Escape Route Protection): Automatic detection is installed only on designated escape routes, such as corridors and stairways.
- L5 (Custom/Special Protection): A bespoke design for buildings with unique risks. For example, a small office with a high-risk server room or a storage area containing flammable materials.
Category P: Protection of Property
The primary goal of a Category P system is to minimise the time between the ignition of a fire and the arrival of the fire brigade, thereby reducing potential damage to the asset.
- P1 (Total Building Protection): Designed to provide the earliest possible warning by installing detection throughout the entire premises.
- P2 (Defined Area Protection): Focused only on specific high-risk or high-value areas within the building.
Sound Level Requirements
To ensure an alarm is effective, sounders must meet specific audible benchmarks as defined in the BS 5839 Category L1 standards:
- General Areas: Minimum 65dB(A) or 5dB(A) above any persistent ambient noise.
- Sleeping Risks: 75dB(A) at the bedhead to ensure occupants are awoken.
- Maximum Limit: Sound levels must not exceed 120dB(A) to prevent hearing damage.
