Project Challenges: The Eurocentral head office presented challenges due to its age and numerous alterations to its footprint over the years. This resulted in a certain amount of unknowns within each system, requiring careful assessment and planning.

The existing ventilation system was substantially outdated and redundant, posing a challenge in restoring it to operational status to meet modern office environment standards.

Morgan Sindall required both mechanical and electrical systems to be upgraded and compatible with a modern office environment, necessitating efficient and economically viable solutions.

We collaborated closely with the design team from Morgan Sindall to devise efficient and economically viable solutions and this partnership ensured that the proposed upgrades aligned with the companies objectives and regulatory standards. We undertook the refurbishment and upgrade of both mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring compatibility with modern office standards which included upgrading the office buildings ventilation system and installing new LED lighting, feature lighting, and lighting controls.

The project was executed in phases to minimise disruptions to the ongoing day to day business of the companies employees and this strategic approach enabled the office to maintain operational capabilities while the refurbishment work progressed seamlessly.

The final result was the successful modernisation of the head office’s mechanical and electrical systems, aligning them with modern standards. The successful completion of the Eurocentral head office refurbishment project by our team underscores our expertise in navigating complex challenges and delivering innovative solutions in office refurbishments. By collaborating closely with the client, we ensured that the upgraded mechanical and electrical systems met modern standards while minimising disruptions and maintaining operational capabilities.

Ingram Brothers

Client: Ingram Brothers
Project length: 3 months
Completion date: January 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief project description: Our electricians at HF were tasked to complete a full LED lighting upgrade of the factory, warehouse and office lighting for the Ingram Brothers headquarters in Paisley, Scotland.

This project covered both the design, build and installation of new LED lighting across the entire site. Our electricians had to make sure that the new LED lighting that we were installing met the required lux levels for the different areas of operation.   Lux is a measure of the amount of light level intensity, which is commonly referred to as unit of illuminance or illumination on a surface area. Lux is an SI unit that measures ‘luminous flux’ per unit area.

We liaised with lighting designers during the initial design phase of the project to create a fully compliant design which we then presented to the client for their comments. Ensuring that our clients are involved in all aspects of the design phases ensures consistency and quality in our work.  With senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover coupled with the opportunity to tap into a wide range of varied services and associated consultants means that we can offer our customers unsurpassed levels of genuinely in-house capabilities.

Following on from the initial design phase we introduced the idea of fitting new lighting control units to the sites corridors, offices and meeting rooms. We presented this option as a green energy solution that would allow Ingram Brothers to cut their energy costs by reducing lighting in areas that weren’t in use.  These lighting control units save energy by switching off lighting in areas that are not in use which, along with the benefits of LED lighting will help them further reduce their electricity costs per annum.  As with so many companies looking to both reduce energy costs and improve their green credentials, this solution was welcomed by the client and was incorporated into the LED lighting upgrade work.

Once the design stage was signed off, our electricians were able to schedule the installation work around the clients busy day to day operations, completing the LED Lighting Installation work on time and to the same high standards that HF have built our name on as the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services.

Project Challenges: There were two core challenges to overcome working on this project.  The first being that the factory, warehouse and offices had to remain fully operational throughout the work.  This meant that our electricians had to work around production schedules and other day to day operations within the company. With decades of experience working in ‘live’ environments, this was not a problem for us and we were able to successfully schedule all work safely around the companies working requirements.

The second challenge was more explosive in nature. The Ingram Brothers specialise in manufacturing high quality icing products for clients in the food industry.  This means that they have, on site their own sugar mill which is defined as ATEX Zone 21.  A Zone 21 area is classified as a location in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances (in the form of powder or dust) is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

As part of our initial design phase, all lighting in this area had to be intrinsically safe to comply with the Zone 21 requirements. This also meant that the installation of LED lighting in this part of the factory had to be completed by our CompEx trained engineers.

From large scale electrical installation work to manned 24 hour call out service and annual inspection and testing, Our Electrical services have become the first choice for some of the country’s leading Food & Drink brands. Hence, these two challenges were easily overcome by our brilliant design and installation team. The entire project was successfully completed safely and to the high standards that are expected of the HF brand.

Slater Steps

Client: Slater Steps
Project length: 3 weeks
Completion date: December 23
HF divisions involved:
Electrical
Mechanical
Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: 21-23 Slater’s Steps is a fully refurbished, open plan office space in Edinburgh, boasting double height ceilings that provide excellent natural light.  As part of the sites refurbishment, HF were called in to compete the electrical work including the install of a new power supply, containment and LED lighting.

As a leading electrical contractor, our experience of working in office refurbishments meant that the installation of new electrical wiring and power supply went without a hitch.

air to air heat pump as part of office refurbishment

As part of the initial project requirements, we were asked to upgrade the offices existing electric panel heaters. However, after our team had completed a site survey, we advised the client that they would be better off taking advantage of a new air to air heat pump system.  This would provide a far more comfortable office environment all year round and benefit the office space greatly over the heating system that they had originally wanted to refurbish. Air to air heat pumps are advanced, efficient heating and cooling systems that provide effortless temperature control for maximum comfort.  They are also very energy efficient which will help the office to reduce their energy consumption whilst also helping to improve the air quality within the open plan office.

The new containment was utilised to install 4 x new Daikin ceiling mounted AC indoor units that our Mechanical team fitted to provide the site with energy efficient heating and cooling all year round.

Further green energy solutions were implemented including LED lighting upgrade work. The new LED lighting means that the refurbished office now benefits from superior lighting that is also more energy efficient, helping to further cut down on the sites yearly energy consumption.

Project Challenges: As with any project of this scope, the biggest challenge was working around other contractors.

Scotwood Interiors were responsible for the fit-out fabric works and our electricians and mechanical engineers successfully worked alongside them to ensure that all the electrical and mechanical work was completed to set schedules that would allow the office decorating to proceed without any delays.

Our clients satisfaction is always a sign that we have done a good job and with this project, the client was so pleased with the quality of our work that our fire & security engineers have already been contracted to replace the offices existing alarm system with a new and improved one.

Brief project description: The family owned Glynhill Hotel & Spa located close to Glasgow Airport and just a few miles from Glasgow city centre is a popular choice for hospitality events ranging from weddings to corporate events, parties and so much more.

To ensure that the venue continues to offer consistently high standards for their guests, the hotel turned to HF to assist them with the upgrading of their four function rooms. They required new LED lighting and control systems to be fitted that gives them greater flexibility for future events whilst also reducing their energy bills.

Our electricians had to remove all of the existing light fittings and electrical wiring along with the existing dimmer control units and transformers.

The new LED lighting was installed along with new electrical wiring for each light fitting. All of the newly installed LED lamps were connected to a Casambi Dimmer Control Systems.

Casambi Dimmer Controls are a serious piece of kit. A sleek looking control system that will allows the hotel to control the lighting in the four different rooms with dimming options and multiple pre-set lighting options.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was ensuring that we did not damage any of the ceilings while completing the electrical wiring replacement. With so much old electrical wiring to be removed and new wiring installed, this was a delicate job but our electricians were able to successfully complete the removal and installation of new wiring without incident.  On top of this challenge, our electricians had to work to a set schedule to ensure that the hotel had the rooms available again for their busy pre-Christmas season. With a vast amount of experience dealing in tight deadlines for electrical installations, we were able to successfully complete the installation of all the required electrical wiring, control systems and led lighting within the agreed upon timeline.

Now fitted with LED lighting throughout the four rooms, the Glynhill Hotel will be able to benefit from an easier to use dimmer control system, modern electrical wiring and energy efficient LED lighting which will help to reduce their monthly energy costs.

Upgrading your businesses old fluorescent or halogen lighting to LED Lighting technology can offer REAL costs savings on your yearly energy bills with reduced maintenance costs and a more inviting working environment that is also eco friendly.

Older lighting solutions that use high wattage bulbs can be replaced with similar or identical LED lighting fixtures that provide the same light output but for a fraction of the energy watts. In fact, a typical 50W halogen bulb can be replaced by a 5W LED light yet achieves the exact same lighting output.  Energy savings of 65% or more can be achieved simply by switching from old fluorescent lighting in your office or retail space.  And this saving can be further enhanced with additional lighting features such as occupancy motion sensors.

To find out more about the benefits of upgrading your businesses lighting to LED, please contact us today. As one of the leading commercial electrical contractors in the UK, the name HF occupies an unprecedented position in industry across the country. We have diversified and developed abreast of industry advancements and have grown into a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies; and all with a family continuity at management level which is rarely seen.

Teagasc

Client: Teagasc Agriculture and Food Development Authority
Completion date: December 2023
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: Teagasc is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry in rural communities across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The College required the installation of new LED lighting for the College and agricultural sheds but needed it completed to a tight deadline.  Working to a strict 8 week turn around WHILE the college was fully operational (with both college students and livestock), our electricians managed to install an impressive two thousand, seven hundred new LED lights across the campus.  The LED lighting upgrade work replaced the colleges previous light fittings which were both inefficient and costly to replace.

The LED upgrade works required our electricians to be working at height via MEWP’S and Scaffolding. While the timescale was tight given the scale of the job, we completed all the electrical work on time and on budget.

The Benefits of LED Lighting

There are many advantages for commercial and industrial businesses when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) including:

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency in lighting are looked at in two ways.  Luminous efficacy and useful lumens.  A business upgrading to LED lighting can result in 65% or more improvement in energy efficiency.  If you are currently using outdated and energy inefficient lighting, this energy saving can be greater.

Long Life

A traditional light bulbs filament will weaken over time which causes the bulb to burn out – LEDs don’t burn out.  An LED’s bulb produces low heat levels, is durable and energy efficient, outlasting other light bulb types by thousands of hours.

Increased Brightness and Intensity

Because LED lighting is capable of emitting such a high level of brightness, it can offer increase lighting power over halogen. This means that not only does it require less power to turn on an LED light, you actually need less LED lights to achieve the same room lighting. Which can save you even more in running costs.

Reduced heat output

LED lights are able to operate at a significantly lower temperature and what little heat they do give off is actually dissipated in a special heat sink.

Reliability

LED lighting is a far more reliable lighting option. They can operate in colder temperatures and are more durable to impact and vibrations because they have no filament or fragile parts.

Increased colour rendering

LED lighting has a strong Colour Rendering Index (CRI) (a measurement of lights ability to reveal the colours of objects) compared to natural light from the sun.  LED lighting with a high CRI makes them an ideal solution for night time security lighting where they can illuminate more objects in a surrounding area thanks to a higher CRI.

Design Flexibility

LED lighting can be bunched into a unit to replace larger bulbs or be arranged in isolation on smaller devices.  They can be strung out in a sequence and come in a wide range of colours.  LEDs are available in a wide range of Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) values ranging from Cool to warm, yellow, white light and so much more.

Instant results

While CFLs take a few moments to warm up and an incandescent bulb works by heating a filament to a temperature that produces light, LEDs are instantaneous and operate at full brightness the moment you flip the switch.

Tranent Farm

Client: Tranent, East Lothian
Completion date: November 2023
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: As part of the upgrades to a working farm in Tranent, East Lothian, the client turned to HF to assist them with the new electrical installation work they required.

They were looking for new sub-main supplies to five of their existing out buildings along with additional areas of the farm and needing an electrical contractor with experience of these kind of electrical installations in an agricultural setting.

Before we could begin the electrical installation, we first had to liaise with Scottish Power to move and upgrade the farms existing main electrical incoming supply.

The existing supply was simply too small and out dated to handle the new installation that the client was requiring. Scottish Power were able to complete this work with no issues and once completed, we were able to get to work.

Our electricians supplied and installed a new EIGHT WAY Electrical Panel Board in building #1, complete with main isolator and S.P.D protection with MCB’s for all outgoing circuits (the five out buildings) and KWH meter for proposed gym supply circuit.

Our electricians were responsible for the complete electrical wiring of the venue. This involved both the fitting of completely new electrical wiring as well as the replacement of old electrical fittings in the venue.

A big part of the new bar redesign is the entertainment systems which required a complete rewiring; while behind the bar, we also fitted new electrical supply points and rewired older electrical fittings to meet the clients requirements.

On the Mechanical side, we removed the old, inefficient water meter and replaced it with a new one and fitted a new Worcester Bosch boiler that was linked to a Google Nest thermostat system. The new heating system was made complete with the installation of new radiators throughout the venue.

The ladies bathroom was completely refurbished by our team with new fittings and plumbing work and we also installed a new fan convector above the main entrance door.  An ideal feature to welcome guests into the new pub when the Scottish Winter rolls in.

Project Challenges: Time was the biggest challenge on this project.  The pub had announced on social media both their closure and opening days and this had been picked up by numerous news outlets. This meant that deadlines had to be met and there was no room for error.

At HF, we have become one of the leading electrical and mechanical installers for the hospitality industry and have proven time and time again that we can deliver when it comes to tight deadlines.  So while the project timeline was tight, it posed no serious concerns for our engineers who, as always, delivered quality work for the client.

All the work was completed on time and the venue, known rebranded as ‘The Millwood’ was able to successfully open as intended in August.

Brief project description: Our Mechanical & Electrical team completed the complete rip out and refit of the University Hospital Hairmyres in East Kilbride.  As ‘A Company Well Connected’ and with our range of in-house capabilities and service as a Mechanical & Electrical Contractor, we successfully completed the wide range of required strip out and re-fit works required.

We removed the existing (domestic) Girpi Pipe Water System and replaced it with new stainless steel piping throughout the ward while all existing sanitary ware in the ward was also stripped out so that they could be properly cleaned before being re-installed on completion of the works.

We fitted new shower valves and taps which had ‘end of line’ sensors fitted to them so that the hospital staff can monitor the DHWR temperatures. This is to ensure that the water temperature remains above 55 degrees Celsius in order to combat the threat of legionella.  The sites water services were also sterilised on completion of the work; and to ensure that this was done thoroughly, samples of the water supply were tested to ensure that no bacteria was present in the system prior to us handing over the site upon completion.

For the hospital wards heating system, we installed new heating controls throughout the facility while the existing supply and extract ventilation was inspected and cleaned with new grilles installed.  Once this work had been completed, the ventilation system was balanced.

Across the ward, we installed new medical gas points to every bed location while also fitting new alarm panels and the existing lighting system was upgraded to energy efficient LED lighting. We also fitted a new nurse call system throughout the bedrooms and bathrooms of the ward.

This new Nurse call system was designed especially for the ward by Wandsworth Healthcare. The new call system also now allows individual overbed lights to operate from a hand-held device.

Our electricians also changed over the main distribution board serving the ward (with a Type II surge protection device installed) and also installed RCBO’s to all outgoing circuits.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was working around the schedules of all other contractors on site and ensuring that we met the completion date deadline given to us by the client.  As with so much of what we do, being able to provide such a wide range of services all under the one roof allows us to work efficiently around these timescales and as such, meet the demands placed on us by the client.

Star Pubs & Bars

Client: Star Pubs & Bars
Project length: 1 Week
Completion date: May 2023

Brief project description: Our Electrical and Mechanical team were refurbishing the kitchen for one of Star Pubs & Bars locations in Scotland.  The actual work involved the fitting of a new canopy, gas interlocking system and the usual plumbing, gas and electrical work that is required for a commercial kitchen to operate.  However when we turned up to complete the work, we noted that the Pubs LPG Tank was located in the middle of a car park and did not have adequate protection around it.  After consulting the client on the health & safety risks, we fitted a new Arco Barrier system to protect the LPG tank and make the area safer for customers and employees at the venue.

Project Challenges: The actual commercial kitchen fitting proceeded smoothly and we were able to complete the work within the quoted timeline to ensure minimal disruption to the venues day to day business operations.

For the car park barrier system, the main challenge was the location itself and safety.  We were having to complete the work in an active car park location.  At HF, Safety is one of our core values.  Individually and collectively, we are all responsible. We ensured that correct safety precautions were followed throughout and we have left the site safer that it was when we first arrived.

Trades House

Client: Trades House, Glasgow
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: The stunningly beautiful Trades House in Glasgow’s Merchant City was first completed in 1794 and now operates as a registered charity helping support the people of Glasgow. They raise funds by holding events such as weddings, meetings, conferences and other larger celebrations throughout the multiple halls that are part of the buildings internal layout.

As with so many historic buildings in Glasgow, when it came time to upgrade their electrical wiring and lighting system, they turned to HF and our electricians for our expertise in dealing with historic building electrical work.

We were tasked with upgrading electrical wiring and lighting in the Grand Hall, Saloon, Stairwell and Entrance Hall while completing complete general electrical work throughout the building.

The Grand Hall is the jewel in the crown of Trades Hall. Our electrical work included the illumination of the frieze above picture rails around the walls of the whole perimeter of the hall using LED tape lighting that was discreetly hidden yet provided a powerful lighting statement.
In the central cupola dome, we completed led lighting and illumination for the 14 crests that proudly sit around the inner perimeter of the cupola dome using micro LED pin spots fixed to a barrel strap that was secured to the existing chandelier.

In the Saloon, we installed an outreach projector spot light to back light over the 6 Coat of Arms. This created a stunning visual feature for the room.

In the stairwell, we installed LED lighting around the perimeter of the Atrium and illuminated the ‘Tree Plaque’ feature above the entrance doors to the Grand Hall.  To complete the stairwell upgrade work, we designed, manufactured and installed 2 bespoke 400mm brass banded globe lights with finials to the bannisters at mid level.

In the Entrance Hall, we installed LED tape up lighting in the high level trough and replaced the 3 central lights with Georgian bell jar lanterns that better kept with the heritage of the buildings architecture.

All of the lighting systems in the Grand Hall and Saloon were connected through a multi channel programmable dimming system that allowed the lighting to be controlled both automatically and manually.

Project Challenges: As with any electrical work in a historic listed building, care and precision were required in equal measure.  With decades of experience dealing with electrical installations in historic buildings, we are very experienced in this type of electrical work and the project was completed without any issues.  The main challenge we found in this project was coming up with the best solution to lighting problems.  We are particularly proud of the led lighting work we completed for the Cupola Dome in the Grand Hall.  Our electricians were able to think outside of the box to come up with a lighting solution that over delivered on our clients expectations yet was well hidden and did not detract from the aesthetic of the beautiful original features of the buildings interior.

NB: Following the successful electrical installation work completed on this project, we returned a year later to complete the full rewiring, lighting design and electrical installation of The Robert Adam Room in the building.

Project Challenges:

The main challenge that we had to deal with during this project was the building itself.  The new Gaucho Restaurant is sited in a Grade 2 listed building on Market Street right in the heart of Newcastle Town Centre.  As with any historical listed building, there were many obstacles to overcome when we began stripping out old electrical wiring and fittings that had been used by previous tenants of the property.  However with such a rich history in electrical installations both in the Hospitality & Tourism sector and on buildings of this vintage, our invaluable experience allowed us to complete the project to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

University of Stirling

Client: University of Stirling
Completion date: December 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: As part of their requirements to both maintain their sporting facilities and reduce their energy costs, the University of Stirling turned to our Electrical division to complete the switch from Fluorescent Lighting to green energy efficient LED Lighting for their indoor tennis court facility.

The electrical work required the rewiring of the main tennis court area that covered courts one to four so that the new LED light fittings could be installed.

While completing the LED Lighting Upgrade work, we also fitted a new Dali Control System. This allows the facility to control the lighting settings suitable for training sessions, club use and performance level events.  All of the courts lighting units are wired back to the main control unit which is located at the court entrance.

Project Challenges:
To ensure that the electrical installation work did not interfere with scheduled use, and to ensure that the University could continue to operate on their courts, we had to complete the electrical work in short windows on two courts at one time.  This meant that we would strip out the old lights on two courts, complete the rewiring and then install the LED Lighting System before then switch over to the other two courts.

As the tennis courts had recently been resurfaced, we had to ensure that the MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms) did not damage the playing surface.  To guarantee this, we used Correx Sheeting and Plywood Sheets to disperse the weight of the MEWPs and ensure that no damage was done to the courts.

The benefits of LED Lighting

Switching to LED Lighting is a great way to reduce your business energy costs.  Now that the sale of CFL Lamps is banned (25th February 2023) and T5 and T8 Fluorescent Lamps will soon follow (25th August 2023), switching to LED Lighting is the logical answer.

Fluorescent lamps contain mercury which is a hazardous substance. Along with the inefficiency of halogen lamps, the RoHS has brought forward a directive to ensure that on these dates,
fluorescent lamps will no longer be available on sale in the UK. What little stock that is currently left on the shelves is gradually being withdrawn. The future lies in LED Lighting and its many benefits including:

1 – Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency in lighting solutions are looked at in two ways.  Luminous efficacy and useful lumens.  This describes the amount of light emitted per unit of power (watts) by the light source.  Upgrading to LED lighting can result in 65% or more improvement in energy efficiency of your business facilities lighting.  If you are currently using outdated and energy inefficient lighting, this energy saving can be even more.

2 – Long Life

The components of an LED light and the way that they generate light means that they have a far greater lifespan than other light sources.  A traditional light bulbs filament will weaken over time which causes the bulb to burn out – LEDs don’t burn out.  An LED’s bulb produces low heat levels, is durable and energy efficient which makes it possible to outlast other light bulb types by thousands of hours.

3 – Increased Brightness and Intensity

Because LED lighting is capable of emitting such a high level of brightness, it can offer increase lighting power over halogen meaning that not only does it require less power to turn on an LED light.  You actually need less LED lights to achieve the same room lighting. Which can save you even more in running costs.

4 – Reduced heat output

It is well known that older lighting solutions gave off more heat than light energy.  LED lights are able to operate at a significantly lower temperature and what little heat they do give off is actually dissipated in a special heat sink. And because LEDs do not emit infrared radiation, they are ideal for lighting heat sensitive areas such is in food production facilities, Museums and medical facilities.

5 – Reliability

LED lighting is a far more reliable lighting option. Not just because of the increased lighting hours that they provide.  But because they can operate in colder temperatures (ideal for walk in freezers) and are more durable to impact and vibrations because they have no filament or fragile parts they are a more reliable option for busy commercial and industrial facilities that need reliable lighting solutions through all hours of the day.

6 – Increased colour rendering

LED lighting has a strong Colour Rendering Index (CRI) which is a measurement of lights ability to reveal the colours of objects compared to an ideal light source aka natural light from the sun.  LED lighting with a high CRI makes them an ideal solution for night time security lighting where they can illuminate more objects in a surrounding area thanks to a higher CRI.

7 – Design Flexibility

LED lighting can be bunched into a unit to replace larger bulbs or be arranged in isolation in smaller devices.  They can be strung out in a sequence and come in a wide range of colours.  In fact, LEDs are available in a wide range of Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) values ranging from Cool to warm, yellow, white light and so much more.  This design freedom means that they can be used to great effect by interior designers, retail stores, museums and so much more.

8 – Instant results

While CFLs take a few moments to warm up and an incandescent bulb works by heating a filament to a temperature that produces light, LEDs are instantaneous and operate at full brightness the moment you flip the switch.

Hampden Stadium

Client: Hampden Stadium
Project length: 6 weeks
Completion date: Spring 2023
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: Just like so many other businesses looking to cut their energy costs, Hampden Park Stadium approached us looking for ways to reduce their energy bills. As one of the largest sporting facilities in Scotland, their energy demands are very high; so any small savings can quickly add up to make a big difference. With thousands of old, inefficient fluorescent lights fitted across the stadium, the easiest thing was to begin upgrading their existing light fittings to modern energy efficient LED light fittings.   Over the early months of the year, our Electricians have been on site at Hampden Park replacing well over 300 different light fittings in the Concourse areas, VIP & Media Receptions and the Sports Injury Clinic.

LED lighting upgrade at sports facility

Project Challenges: We had to work around the busy schedule of sporting events, conferences, exhibitions and day to day business operations held at the venue.  With the fittings required in the concourses,  receptions and sports clinic, we had to schedule appropriate times with each area to complete the work safely and without causing disruption to day to day operations.

The benefits of LED Lighting

There are many advantages for commercial, retail and industrial business sectors when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL).

Blue Lagoon Fish & Chip Restaurant

Client: Blue Lagoon Fish & Chips Restaurant
Project length: 6 weeks
Project value: £30K
Completion date: November 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: Our team of electricians were contracted to complete the electrical work for the new Blue Lagoon Fish & Chips restaurant due to open in Glasgow’s city centre. The work began by stripping out the existing electrical wiring and lighting, none of which was required for the new restaurant. Our electricians rewired the venue, replaced the main electrical distribution board and installed new lighting, small power and data throughout, all to Blue Lagoons design specification. One of the more interesting aspects of the electrical fit out of the new restaurant was the lighting that needed to be added to the centre piece ‘boat’. This required colour changing LED lighting with all cabling to be hidden from view.

Project Challenges: Working in a City Centre location always has its challenges due to the high foot traffic in the area, lack of suitable on site parking and heavy traffic congestion.  However we have worked on many restaurant fit outs in the City Centre so this presented no significant challenges that we have not faced before.

What was a more interesting challenge was the installation of a boat feature for the new restaurant. Our electricians had to install colour changing LED lighting strips to the boat as part of the restaurants lighting effects. The lighting cables had to be fitted in exactly the right place in order to be hidden from view. The devil is in the detail and when it comes to lighting features for restaurants, we know how important the finished article is to our clients. We fitted the new lighting perfectly hidden from view and are happy with the end result.

Albert Bartlett

Client: Albert Bartlett
Project length: 2 weeks
Project value: £50K
Completion date: September 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Green Energy

Brief project description: Our Green Energy Electricians were contracted to carry out the fitting of two new 200 amp supplies for Albert Bartlett so that they could in turn supply eight Twin 32 amp pedestals that were needed to charge their new fleet refrigerated trailers.

The refrigerated trailers electricity was previously being supplied by a diesel generator and the client was making the switch in order to reduce operating and running costs while lowering their carbon footprint.

Project Challenges: When installing the electrical pedestals, the best practice is to provide the pedestals with a TT earth. This involves insulating the equipment from the distributors earthing system, and creating our own.

Previously, this would have been done by means of earthing rods and a copper electrode which is driven into the ground.

Each rod is approximately 1m long, and to provide an acceptable reading it can mean that multiple rods need to be driven into the ground in order to reach a safe resistance. A stable reading is deemed as anything below 200Ω. For comparison, common readings from the distributor’s earthing system are much lower, <0.3Ω.

For safety, we wanted to get the reading down to as low a reading as possible but also not have to worry about what we may hit when driving rods into the ground.

A new innovation in electrical grounding that is now on the market is something called Condudisc, produced by Earthing Services. This new system is currently the forefront of earthing without the need for fitting rods.

The system requires a small hole (400mm (l) x 400mm (w) x 500mm (d) in which we place the Condudisc with an earth cable then going to the electrical equipment. When tested, we were able to get the readings down to just 8Ω!

We further enhanced the system by installing an additional two Condudiscs for each bank of 4 pedestals and encased the discs in the manufacturer approved Conducrete, another innovation by Earthing Services which improves the reliability of the discs.

As with any new technology, the use of the ConduDisc was a big step to take but has proved to be the best option as we have provided our client with a safe electrical installation with a stable and reliable TT earth. All with reduced installation costs due to this innovative new grounding method.

Earthing using this method is not limited to this type of electrical installation.  It can be used in other applications by HF such as our EV Charger installation work. EV chargers installations can sometimes require the need for a TT earth. Our telecommunications division HF Comms will also benefit from the use of this new grounding method as many of their installations are in remote locations across the UK and their installation TT earth specifications require the reading to be as low as 10 Ω.

Connected Kerb EV Charger

Client: Connected Kerb
Project length: 2 days
Project value: £2K
Completion date: October 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Green Energy

Brief project description: Our Green Energy team were called out to Callander, near Stirling to replace a faulty wall mounted EV charger with a brand new Connected Kerbs dual Gecko charger system. As more and more drivers switch to Electric Vehicles, ensuring that the UK charging network is not just expanding but being well maintained is of vital importance.  Connected Kerbs ‘Gecko’ EV charging system is designed to fit into the existing architecture of the streets of towns and cities like Callander with minimal visual impact while delivering vital charging points for the ever expanding number of electric vehicles on our roads.

Project Challenges: Going from a wall mounted EV charging system to a ground mounted charging system is more than just simply unscrewing one device and installing another. Civils contractors were required to provide ducting for the new ground mounted unit and for the installation of the Mounting Box that the new dual mount chargers would be fitted to.

When the work began to install the ducting and mounting box, a previous concrete pad for an older building that may have been in the position was discovered. This impeded the ability to get an earth rod or ConduDisc in place to provide a TT earth.

Our specialist Green Energy Electricians managed to find a suitable ‘work around’ solution to this by install a Matt:E auto-reset PME device. This device, when it detects a supply fault, will immediately cut off the supply to the EV charger. When it detects the fault has cleared, it automatically resets.

Eyemouth High School Sports Field Lighting

Client: Eyemouth High School
Project length: 3 day
Completion date: September 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: HF were called in to upgrade the existing floodlighting system for Eyemouth High School . The work required removing the existing pitch side floodlights which were old and inefficient, and replacing them with new energy efficient LED units.

As part of the lighting upgrade, we set up a lighting control system that allows the Schools ground manager to control the floodlights and activate them all or select each pitch lighting individually. This is a massive step forwards in energy conservation for the School as previously, all of the floodlights had to be turned on across the entire three pitch space, regardless of whether only one of the pitches was being used. The new system will allow them to save even more on their energy bills because of this feature.

There are many advantages for commercial, retail and industrial business sectors when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). These range from cost to the quality of light emitted and even the lifespan of the lights.
You can read more about the benefits of upgrading to LED Lighting using the link below.

We were successfully able to complete the lighting upgrades in the specified time and with the increasing energy costs across the UK, the School will nwo benefit from more efficient lighting, with more customisation and reduced energy costs – just in time for the darker winter months ahead.

Project Challenges: Because the School pitches are under near constant use, our available access to the pitches to complete the upgrade work was limited. With the outdoor space is used throughout the day by the school as well as for after school hires meaning there were few available time slots to complete the work. At HF however, we have vast experience of working in live sites are were able to safely complete our work without hindering the usual day to day sports activities.
This was imperative for the School who stipulated that the pitches had to remain open and safe for use by their pupils.

Completion date: July 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: The Pure Gym on Hope Street in Glasgow had to temporarily close over a weekend in July because the Gyms water system booster pump had failed causing the entire building to have no hot or cold running water.

Our Mechanical Engineers were called out on the Monday and quickly diagnosed the issue.  The solution required a new booster pump motor and invertor however the lead time for these parts would be 8-10 weeks!

The Hope Street Pure Gym is one of the brands busiest locations in Glasgow and being closed for any length of time was simply not an option.  Our Mechanical Engineers carried out a temporary repair that bypassed the pump set so that the gym had cold and hot running water again (though not to the same level as they normally require).  This temporary solution allowed the gym to reopen again.

Due to the importance of keeping the business open and at the high standards expected, it was decided that a completely new pump set would be installed rather than wait the 8-10 weeks for the replacement parts.

We carried out the fitting of the replacement pump set and conducted necessary tests on the new device to ensure that it was installed correctly.

The Pure Gym is now up and running again at full capabilities thanks to a combination of intelligent thinking from our on call team to conduct a bypass and our installation team for fitting a new pump set so quickly.

Project Challenges: The previous pump set which had broken was a 3 phase unit.  The new pump unit to be fitted was a single phase pump unit. We required the assistance of our Electrician colleagues to convert the new pump set to run to single phase.

Special Mention: What makes this job of particular interest is the short timeline. We were initially called to the site on the 18th of the month and submitted a quote for the work and new pump unit on the 19th.  The quote was accepted on the 20th and all the work was completed on the 21st.  This is testament to the incredible work our team in Mechanical and Electrical do day in, day out. HF’s family culture means much more than dates and numbers. It’s quite literally, the core of the business. We consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our ongoing success.

Project value: £24K
Completion date: June 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical

Brief project description: We were contracted to complete the mechanical, plumbing, heating and electrical work for the Miller & Carter Steakhouse location in Edinburgh.

Our Mechanical & Electrical team operating out of our Edinburgh Branch completed the fit out of the new bathroom/toilet areas in the restaurant including new sinks, urinals and seated toilets.

Newlands Lawn Tennis Club

Client: Newlands Lawn Tennis Club
Project length: 2 days
Project value: £1.5K
Completion date: June 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: The tennis clubs heating control system had become faulty causing the temperature within the Squash Courts section of the facility to become ‘uncomfortable’.

The heating control system had previously been fitted by an external heating contractor and over the years, the system had struggled to cope with various upgrades and alterations to the sites heating requirements.

electrical repairs at a sports centre

One of our Glasgow electrician HF members was dispatched to install a new remote thermostat and ensure that a new electrical supply was installed for the new boiler that had been fitted at the tennis club.

Project Challenges: As mentioned, the various alterations to the heating system throughout the years meant that a complete overhaul of the heating control system was required.  The challenge for our electrical contract team was to ensure that the new system would connect with the newly installed boiler system.

The end result is that the Tennis Club now has a far more user friendly control system that comes complete with a remote temperature control unit for the squash courts area itself.

The Lord Lounsdale

Client: The Lord Lounsdale / Mitchells and Butlers
Project length: 20 days
Project value: £25K
Completion date: May 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: Our Electrical Division were contracted to  were contracted to complete electrical work for The Lord Lounsdale Bar and Restaurant in Paisley.  The work included the installation of new external lighting for the outdoor beer garden area and the upgrading of the main electrical distribution boards.  This included the re-wiring of fuse boards to modern MCB distribution boards.

Inside the restaurant area, we installed a new dimming system that will help the restaurant area become a more intimate setting and fitted brand new, energy efficient LED lighting in the Bar area.

The final electrical work we completed was the installation and alteration of new circuits into the kitchen for the new electrical equipment that was to be fitted.

Project Challenges:
As is so often the case with businesses in the hospitality sector, timescales were tight.  A number of different contractors were involved in the bar and restaurant fitting which meant that schedules had to work around each other.

The ‘soft start’ allowed for some works to be carried out prior to the complete closure of the bar and restaurant which restricted the number of contractors on site, but from the minute that the site was closed for the refitting work to begin, it was all hands on deck to get the works completed on time. This is because the refit also included structural works in the kitchen area that required a wall to be knocked down so that the kitchen could be extended into an unused room.

creara hotel swimming poolBrief project description: HF were contracted to complete the refurbishment of the Crerar Hotel Spa and Swimming Pool area.

The existing swimming pool at the hotel was refurbished with new LED lighting and emergency lighting system installed.

Additional electrical installation work took place in the treatment rooms, changing rooms, toilets and Spa reception. We also installed electrical designer radiators as part of a new heating system in the Spa.

Our Mechanical Division were responsible for the installation of a brand new air conditioning system as well as the design and fitting of new ventilation system for the Swimming Pool and Spa area.

After-Pic

Project Challenges:
The entire project had to be completed while the main hotel was still operational.  This meant that our Electrical and Mechanical work had to be scheduled around busy hotel activities during the course of the day to ensure minimise disruption both to the hotel staff but also, most importantly for the hotel guests.

This was particularly challenging when we have to shut off the electrical supply to the entire hotel which was necessary in order to connect the Hotel and Spa Distribution Boards.

Working in a specialist environment such as a swimming pool is deemed as a ‘Special Installations of Locations’ job that forms a significant part of the Requirements for Electrical Installation. This means that we have to follow strict installation guidelines to ensure that all electrical installation work was fully compliant with current standards.

Brief project description: HF were contracted to complete the Electrical, Mechanical and Fire & Security work for the refurbishment of the old Kinning Park Primary School that has been used as a local community centre since 1979. electrical contractor for commercial work

Electrical – Our electrical division were responsible for the complete installation of brand new mains power source, including upgraded CT metering and the installation of Distribution Boards throughout the building. As part of the complete rewiring of the building, we also fitted new electrical wiring from local distribution boards to new LED light fittings (and refurbished and upgraded fittings) as well as additional small power outlets.

The architectural designs required for the job included dimming controlled lighting in set ground and first floor open plan areas.

Working alongside our Mechanical division, we were responsible for the installation of new commercial kitchen equipment and the installation of Smoke Vent controls (required by our Fire & Security Division) that were connected to the roof Velux windows with main and remote panels located as required.

An elevator was installed by a specialist lift fitting contractor and to ensure the building was compliant, we a installed disabled refuge system on all main and half landing levels of the building that can be used in the event of an emergency.

We ensured that we stayed in close contact with our fellow contractors within HF to assist with power supplies and control requirements where necessary.

mechanical contractor for hvac plumbing and heating services

Mechanical – Our Mechanical Division were tasked with the installation of the buildings brand new central heating system and plumbing system.  This included everything from new combi boilers to radiators, pipping, sink units, toilets and showers.

Because of the age of the building, we fitted a new Gas supply for both boilers and kitchen cooking equipment.

Our HVAC team were also tasked with installing new ventilation and extraction systems throughout the building.

fire & security installers

Fire & Security – Our Fire & Security engineers installed a brand new L2 fire alarm system throughout the building that connected to various Mechanical installed gas systems.  We fitted a variety of Security devices and CCTV cameras across the site ranging from tamper alarms on windows to motion sensors in hallways, bell boxes and security lighting outside. We installed video and pin code Access Control Systems that use simple to operate control handsets installed and interlinked across all offices throughout the building.

Controls Jobs

Controls – Our Automated Controls team were contracted to design, build and install a main control panel for the site that would be located within the plant room of the building. The control system included wire to all valves and pumps and was linked with newly installed zonal thermostats throughout all levels of the structure. The controls system our team designed included built and wired controls for kitchen extract and intake fans as well as heating battery controls for both the kitchen and ground floor toilet areas.

Project Challenges:
The architect/interior designers wanted to keep the authentic rustic look and feel of the original school building where possible.  This meant that we had to work around existing interior design features. The Kinning Park Complex was originally built in 1910 as the science block of Lambhill Street Secondary School.  Due to the age of the building, difficult access restrictions and the complex nature of rewiring such an old building while installing new plumbing and heating systems – all while ensuring that the building met the latest fire and security standards –  understandably had its challenges.  But as ‘A Company Well Connected’, we can provide Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security as well as Control System services all under the one roof.  This means that through experience, skill and inhouse communication, our team were able to work through any obstacle that popped up during the site fitting.

Two Neighbours EV Charging Installation

Client: Domestic Customer (Neighbours)
Project length: 1 Day
Completion date: March 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Green Energy

Brief project description: We were contacted by a resident living at  No. 15 who was initially enquiring about having an EV charger installed at his home. He advised us that other installers had been willing to quote but nobody had come to survey his property as the electrical installation was what can only be described as’ bit difficult’. This was because the property garage (where the EV Charger was to be installed) was located at the other end of the garden, far away from the house.

We surveyed the site and provided the customer with our quotation and breakdown of what work was required. While we were conducting our site survey, the resident at No. 15’s next door neighbour at No. 11, asked if we could also provide a quote to install an EV charger at his home, which was in the exact same situation with the garage being located at the other end of the garden from the house.

Project Challenges: During the EV installation survey, we discovered that both properties were on the dreaded looped electrical supply. It transpired that his supply in fact came from the property at No. 11 house which meant that we could not connect No. 15 or No. 11 chargers to the networks until they were successfully ‘un-looped’.

Scottish Power will not allow the connection of an EV charger with this type of supply. As a result, the customer was needing to have their home un-looped from the next-door neighbour’s electrical supply. Scottish Power were called out to install a brand new supply cable to the property – completely free of charge to the customer.

To make the project even more of a challenge, the deadline for installing chargers to gain the OZEV grant being 31st March, and the DNO stating between 7-15 weeks for a new supply to be installed meant we were up against the clock if both customers were going to be able to receive their grants.

We kept in constant contact with SPEN and through our persistence, we managed to book a date of the 25th March for their supply to be installed. The HF Electrical team completed both installations on the same day and both customers were understandably left very happy as the work was completed before the deadline and they would be in receipt of the OZEV grants before they expired.

What the customer said

“Superb service from your Electrician/EV Installer Graeme Sneddon. Great help dealing with Scottish Power. Not an easy job!!! Cheers”

As more and more car manufacturers release new Electric Vehicles with better range and more efficient, faster charging options, there is a growing wave of support from customers looking to make the switch from petrol and diesel powered vehicles. And with more and more of these car owners making the switch to electric vehicles, there is a strong demand for at home charging systems to be fitted.

The different types of EV Charger

EV charging points are not like petrol stations with universal pumps. There are multiple branded manufacturer options available and various styles of EV charging station outlets to choose from. Wall mounted 7kW EV chargers are the most common and are compatible with all current electric vehicles on sale (with exception of some hybrid models) and an average charge time for an electric vehicle will take between 6 to 7 hours (though this is getting better all the time). There are faster, more powerful charging systems and even something called ‘Rapid Chargers’ available. Our qualified EV Charger Installation team can advise you on the best fit for your EV Charging needs.

Gaucho Restaurant Fitting

Brief project description: Our Electrical Division were contracted to complete the electrical fit out of the new Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse themed restaurant to be opened in Glasgow. The works included the installation of new power, lighting and dimming systems for the restaurant as well as new data wiring that would allow the new venue to have a higher level of security over wireless networks.  We also installed the wiring for the new restaurants sound system.

Our Fire & Security Division were commissioned to upgrade the existing sites Fire Alarm Systems, a new Intruder Alarm System and state of the art CCTV system.

Project Challenges: Our Electrical Division had to carry out extensive electrical refurbishment works throughout the premises whilst retaining the main structure of the building, not damaging ceilings or walls which were being retained.

As a professional Electrical Contractors we have worked on many similar Restaurant fitting projects in Glasgow for the Hospitality & Tourism sector. This invaluable experience allows us to complete these kinds of projects to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

Ohme Home Pro EV Charging Installation

Client: Domestic Customer
Project length: 1/2 Day
Completion date: February 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Green Energy

Brief project description: We were contracted to install a brand new Ohme Home Pro EV charger for a customer in Glasgow. What makes the Ohme Home Pro EV charger so special is that it has full 4G capabilities. This connects the system to its own back office and allows the customer to select which energy tariff they are using when charging their electric vehicle.

The 4G connected charger then inputs the cost per unit of electricity at the time and gives the customer an accurate cost per charge (depending on the battery level of the vehicle at the time of charging, and the target charge level they are trying to achieve). This allows the customer to see when is the best time of the day to charge their vehicle, creating real cost potential to the customer over the course of the year (for example if their tariff was on a lower rate at night time to encourage overnight charging).

Project Challenges: During the initial site survey for the EV Charging Installation, our Engineers spotted that the customers supply to their home was looped. This method of supplying semi-detached and terraced properties in Glasgow was once a popular choice and means that one cable has been taken from the main supply cable in the street to one house. Then another cable ‘loops’ from this supply to the house(s) next door.

Scottish Power will not allow the connection of an EV charger with this type of supply. As a result, the customer was needing to have their home un-looped from the next-door neighbour’s electrical supply. Scottish Power were called out to install a brand new supply cable to the property – completely free of charge to the customer.

Because our engineers picked this up during the initial home survey and highlighted the problem to SP Energy Networks at the point of application, it took all the hassle away from the customer. It is this level of detail and service that we are so proud of when it comes to electrical installations such as EV Charging Point fitting.

When the property was ‘un-looped’, SP Energy Networks informed us that the works were complete and we were able to carry out our full installation of the new Ohme Home Pro EV Charger.

What the customer said

“Highly recommend HF for EV Charger installation. I got several quotes but HF were the only supplier who actually did an in-person site visit. Just as well too as they spotted I was on a looped supply. They then submitted the request to Scottish Power on my behalf to have a direct supply installed to my home and helped me navigate my way through that confusing process. Once that was done the installation of the charger was spot on – an excellent piece of work.”

ev charging installation for a domestic garage

Brief project description: Our qualified EV Charging Installers were hired to install a new ‘Wallbox Pulsar‘ Tethered EV Charging Point along with additional IP-rated garden sockets for a property in Glasgow. The electrical installation work required the consumer unit in the garage to be upgraded to a more modern unit. We also increased the size of the cable supplying this consumer unit to cope with the increased demand of the EV charger.

Project Challenges: The frontal area of the garage where the EV charging point was to be fitted was quite narrow.  This meant that we could only fit a certain size of EV Charging Point.  Thanks to the advances in EV Charging technology, we were able to fit a new compact charger from specialist manufacturer Wallbox to the restricted space.

Customer Quote: “I am very happy with the work carried out.  Very helpful installer and overall am impressed with the work done.

Valneva

Client: Valneva / Bouygues Energies
Project length: 9 months
Completion date: December 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: Our Electrical Division were contracted to fitout the new Valneva manufacturing vaccine laboratories and energy centre that was under construction in Livingston.  The electrical installation work required the fitting of various metal containment units across the facility including Ladder Rack, Cable Tray, Trunking and Cable Baskets.

Bio Grade Dado Trunking was specified for the electrical installation within the labs clean room areas which were also fitted with a central battery emergency lighting system.

Across the new facility, various cable types were installed including FP600s, FP200, XLPE SWA and LSF Singles.  In the main server room, Data Baskets and Data Matting were installed while Schneider Isobar P Distribution Boards were fitted at various locations within the facility.

Our electrical team were also required to install Street Lighting and Floodlighting at specified external locations on the site.

Project Challenges: Working alongside various other contractors while dealing with an ever-changing design as works progressed is always a challenge but our electrical team have years of experience in this type of service.

The work had to be completed to a very tight timescales. To achieve this, various shift patterns and extended hours were required by our team to meet the constraints of the programme.

An interesting additional project challenge during this job was that, due to the laboratory clean room environment and air pressure values, all routes into clean rooms had to be suitably sealed to maintain pressures.

Customer Quote: “This was my first experience in using HF as a sub-contractor and I was very pleased with the way that they handled and delivered this challenging project.

With a very tight timeline due to client demand there was many challenges which HF worked very hard to achieve. Their flexibility and willingness to adapt to variations was exceptional given that there were a lot of design changes which came from our main client’s requirements., The site team were very professional and I would have no hesitation in using HF again on any of our projects.”

All Bar One

Client: All Bar One / Mitchells and Butlers
Project length: 19 days
Completion date: November 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security

Brief project description: We completed the electrical refurbishment of the Glasgow All Bar One ground and first floor public areas. Our work also required expertise from our Mechanical and Fire & Security divisions for the Plumbing Fittings and Fire & Safety Testing of the newly refurbished Restaurant and Bar in Glasgow City Centre.

The electrical work required the replacement of all existing wall and pendant light fittings in the public areas. These were replaced with new, client sourced, light fittings. We were also tasked with the installation of centre piece LED lighting used for ‘feature columns’ in the public spaces. These ‘feature columns’ form a big visual element of the interior design layout of the refurbishment of the restaurant/bar.

Additional lighting units were fitted to replace the existing track lighting units in the public spaces and we installed LED lighting strips to the back bar gantry, front bar area, masterclass bar and upstairs cabinets to help the restaurant/bar area ‘mood lighting’.

The newly fitted lighting systems were all connected through a Tiger dimming system which replaced the Bars existing individual dimmers for lighting circuits. This new system now allows the All Bar One hospitality team to set specific lighting scenes dependant on time of day.

Our electrical team also fitted new plug sockets throughout the premises, all of which came with decorative twin USB sockets.

Our Mechanical Division were tasked with all the new plumbing fittings work for the new kitchen area.  We also provided all of the plumbing fittings for the public washrooms in the venue.

Our Fire & Security Division completed the Fire Risk Assessment work for the newly refurbished Bar/Restaurant and completed successful testing of the Fire Alarm System.

Project Challenges: This project was completed in Glasgow City centre while the COP26 conference was taking place.  This meant that our electrical, mechanical and fire & security team had to deal with the many road closures in Glasgow as well as other unique obstacles caused during the running of COP26.

The biggest project challenge however was the very tight timescales. All Bar One officially closed for the Bar/Restaurant Refurbishment to commence on Sunday 17th October. The final handover was scheduled to be on Monday 8th November with the venue to re-open on Wednesday 10th. This meant that there was a large amount of work to be done in a very short space of time.

With multiple service contractors (including plumbers, tilers, joinery, decorating and flooring contractors) all present and all working in relatively small spaces, and with a short time scale to complete the project, it was challenging to coordinate our necessary works alongside the other trades and their schedules.

However, as a professional Restaurant/Bar fitters we have worked on many similar projects in the Hospitality & Tourism sector which has given us invaluable experience to allow us to complete this kind of work to these kind of deadlines to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

Blackhall St Columba’s Church

Client: John Dennis
Project length: 12 months
Project Value: £210k
Completion date: August 2020
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Fire & Security

Brief project description: Our Electrical and Fire & Security divisions were contracted to carry out the following installation works to Blackhall St Columba’s Church located in Edinburgh:

Power Distribution

Our Electricians provided new TPN distribution boards within the phase 1 area as noted on the schematic and on layout drawings. This included provided boards as split power and lighting boards where detailed.

General Power Installation

We fitted new electrical sockets which were installed throughout the Church for general use and for use by the assigned AV Contractor.

Lighting Installation

As part of an upgrade to LED lighting, we provided a complete internal lighting and lighting control scheme for the project. This included providing LED lighting in plant-rooms and utility areas for safe access and working conditions for occupants.

Emergency Lighting Installation

Emergency Lighting is essential for the safety of occupants who need to leave a building safely and quickly in the event of a fire.  We provided an emergency lighting installation service that provides adequate escape lighting to the building in cases of emergency and/or mains power failure.

Fire Alarm and System Installation

Our Fire & Security Division were contracted to provide L1 detection systems with variations as agreed. Aspirating Fire and Smoke Detection Systems were installed at high level points within the main hall.

Project Challenges:

The Blackhall St Columba’s Church main hall is 13 metres high. As part of the electrical rewiring process, we had to re-wire and hang the LED lights using a mobile elevation work platform (MEWP). At HF, we recognise the importance of continual improvement in Health and Safety standards. All contract managers have Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificates, issued by the CITB. A core group of engineers all possess PASMA tickets, which allows them to operate mobile towers and scaffolds. They also have IPAF tickets for the operation of Mobile Elevating Working Platforms such as MEWP, Cherry Pickers and Scissor Lifts, in a safe and professional manner.

Restaurant 63rd + 1st

Client: 63rd + 1st Restaurant / Diverse Projects Ltd
Project length: 1 month
Completion date: September 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: Our electrical team were contracted to carry out the electrical fit out for the restaurant 63rd + 1st located in Glasgow.  The work also included alterations to existing fire alarm systems.

The existing lighting in the public areas of the restaurant were stripped out and our team installed additional wiring to facilitate additional new lighting points that were specified in the new interior design layout. We then fitted all new light fitments to the public areas and recommissioned the lighting control system.

We re-used the existing distribution equipment and dimming panels on this project and upgraded electrical equipment with additional RCBO’s (Power distribution and circuit protectors) to comply with current regulations.

On top of the noted upgrades, we also installed additional plug socket for the public and staff areas of the restaurant as per design drawings. All the new sockets came complete with USB and USB-C charging points.

Project Challenges: With multiple service contractors including our own electricians, as well as plumbers, tilers, joinery, decorating and flooring contractors; all present and all working in relatively small spaces and with a short time scale to complete the project, it can be challenging to coordinate our necessary electrical works alongside the other trades.

With such a rich history of working on restaurant and shop fittings in Glasgow in the past, the on- site teams have all worked together on similar projects which greatly assisted progress and communication. This allowed us to complete the required work to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

Customer quotes:

“As the first venue for this new venture in Scotland, 63rd + 1st Glasgow was a challenging & demanding project to deliver, with a high complexity of M&E works. From their initial detailed tender survey through to project delivery HF group were fantastic & a pleasure to work with throughout. From senior management to the guys all onsite there was a real can do attitude, that played a massive part in ensuring the successful delivery of this project.”

New Macron Store – Manchester

Client: Macron SPA Bologna, Italy
Project length: 3 Weeks
Project value: £28k
Completion date: September 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical

Brief project description: This is Macron’s new store at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester. HF Group and our Manchester Office were employed to deliver the full package of Electrical Services as we had previously carried out for the Macron stores in Glasgow and Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.

Our services included the electrical work and data cabling. All works were carried out in-house and shop fitting & joinery works, flooring, painting & decoration and racking works were carried out as part of the shop fitting process.

The project was delivered on time and on budget including additional works requested and variations.

Project Challenges: Delivering the full package in under four weeks to reach the critical opening date with all trades working together in relatively small areas was a challenge. However, as with previous shop fitting projects, we operated with seamless site coordination on this project.

During the project, we encountered an issue with data communication between the AJ Bell Stadium and and the shop data links. This was resolved by our own Electrical Engineers and all of the systems were working perfectly in time for the opening..

Customer quotes:

“Absolutely delighted with the service received and works carried out by HF”.
Alex Buchanan.
